Why is it so easy to say yes to new tasks? Is it an internal optimism, an unwillingness to look at what it takes to get anything done in this world, or a desire to please? There are many reasons why we say yes, but only a few reasons why we should:
- We have to
- We have the time, energy, and expertise
- We really do intend to follow through
- We know we will follow through
- We won't hurt the person we say yes to if we are wrong if we can't manage to follow through
- We can hand off the task to someone else
If those kinds of conditions aren't met, then we shouldn't take on a commitment.
